MADISON, Wis. - (06/02/05) -- STAR CU, which bills itself as theworld's only independent credit union just for kids, opened itsdoors inside the Boys & Girls Club here this week, the firstnew state chartered credit union in eight years. The credit unionis being jointly operated by Summit CU and CUNA CU. Approximately20 students have already opened accounts at STAR CU, which has seta goal of 100 children opening savings accounts by year-end.Jessica Wilson, who has worked in financial institutions for eightyears, has been hired as STAR president and manager. She will teachmembers the benefits of saving money and encourage children to openaccounts. CUNA CU and Summit CU will cover all operating costs,which are anticipated to be about $40,000 annually. CUNA MutualGroup Foundation and the Wisconsin CU League Community InvestmentFund are both contributing $5000 in start-up capital.
