The winners — by designated asset-size categories — are:

  • $1.6 billion Royal CU, Eau Claire, Wis., — 1st Place Winner, Over $250 million in assets
  • $1.4 billion Bayport CU, Newport News, Va., — Honorable Mention, Over $250M
  • $105 million Northeast Community CU, Elizabethton, Tenn., — 1st Place Winner, Under $250M
  • $87 million Southwest 66 CU, Odessa, Texas — Honorable Mention, Under $250M

The award — which the trade association said recognizes outstanding achievements in credit union community involvement — will be presented at this year's CUNA Community Credit Union Conference & The Federation Annual Conference, Sept. 22-25, in Phoenix.
CUNA said the Community Credit Union of the Year Award honors credit unions that embody credit union ideals, get involved in their community and meet the needs of their own diverse member bases. Each credit union applicant is judged on three criteria: Member Impact, Community Impact and Financial Impact.

"The winners of this year's award prove that the generous, cooperative spirit of the credit union movement extends beyond the credit union itself," James Carrick, CUNA's vice president of learning events, said in a prepared statement. "We are proud and honored to recognize the accomplishments of these credit unions that have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of their communities."
