CUs Monitor Crisis In Kenya

MADISON, Wis. - Credit unions were keeping a close eye on Kenya last week as riots escalated over a presidential election.

According the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), credit unions in Kenya have not been affected by the recent turmoil that has resulted in more than 300 people being killed since President Mwai Kibaki was sworn in for another term as the country’s president.

WOCCU currently has three projects in Kenya related to SACCOs, or credit unions: the SACCO Growth project, which is designed to provide technical assistance to consultants work with credit unions; the SACCO Capacity Building Program, which is designed to improve the product pricing and financial efficiency of about 20 SACCOs; and Mitigating the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Economic Growth through Credit Union Modernization, Institutional Restructuring, Agricultural Business Development and Services and Education.
