ST. PAUL, Minn.-The Minnesota Credit Union Network recently held Credit Union Day at the Capitol, an event aimed at bringing the credit union community together with their lawmakers.
The event, which welcomed more than 125 credit union professionals and volunteers, reminded elected officials that Minnesota credit unions are trusted, hometown financial institutions with a stake in and commitment to the communities and the members they serve.
During this annual advocacy event, credit unions received political insight from several state leaders, including Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Department of Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman, Attorney General Lori Swanson, and Sen. Geoff Michel. These leaders recognized credit unions for their unique cooperative structure and not-for-profit business model and praised them for their dedication to serving members. Swanson outlined her plan to take on predatory and payday lenders, as well as unnecessary foreclosures and fraud. "You are close to your customers and know how to bring value to them," she said. "The state needs more of that type of service.
The theme for the event this year was "Credit Unions: A Smarter Choice," and focused on reminding elected officials that credit unions are locally-based financial institutions that provide consumers a better financial option. Throughout the day, professionals and volunteers met with their elected officials to discuss how credit unions help Minnesota consumers improve their financial health and well-being.
In addition to legislative speakers, MnCUN's Credit Union Day at the Capitol offered informative sessions that discussed redistricting, 2012 legislative priorities, advocacy basics, and how to effectively communicate with legislators.
