The awards seek to “honor those individuals who exemplify what DE stands for through their individual or cooperative efforts to make a difference in their credit union, community or on a national/international basis.”

The winner of the Individual Achievement Award is Paul Thompson, who is being recognized for his book, “Development of the Modern U.S. Credit Union 1970-2010.” Excerpts from the book appeared in Credit Union Journal earlier this year. Thompson is a former speechwriter for CUNA.

The Cooperative Spirit Award, which honors a group of individuals (DEs) for a project that has made a “significant difference to a community, school, a credit union or the greater credit union movement,” is being presented to North Carolina’s DEs. The North Carolinians have created and offered a History and Philosophy Conference for North Carolina professionals to “enrich their understanding of the credit union values and principles.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the credit union movement and the DE program over several years of service, is being presented to Bob Schumacher, the former CEO of Mountain Crest CU and well known as the longtime master of ceremonies for the annual Herb Wegner Awards.

This year’s awards will be presented during the annual DE Workshop in Raleigh, N.C. on Aug. 15.
