EL MONTE, Calif. – At least 15 members of Vons CU believe they had their debit card PINs stolen while buying gas at a station here, then used to withdraw cash in places like Las Vegas, Palm Springs and New York.

Police believe the card IDs were stolen with a so-called skimmer, a machine that is surreptitiously attached to the gas pump that records PINs and other identifying information from cards.
Other area institutions, including Bank of America, are also reporting card compromises, with as many as 100 customer accounts affected. At least $10,000 has been reported stolen from those accounts.
