Don't touch that dial! Rhode Island CUs launch local TV show

Rhode Island credit unions will mark National Financial Education Month with the launch of a new monthly, 30-minute financial education TV program in produced by the Cooperative Credit Union Association, the league serving CUs in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Delaware.

Consumers who subscribe to Cox Communications cable network throughout Rhode Island will be able to watch the program which is being produced by CCUA under its “BetterValues/BetterBanking” consumer awareness campaign.

Paul Gentile and Seth Magaziner

CCUA explained that “Better Banking” will offer banking tips and financial information, interviews with experts and tutorials on money management, “all designed to help viewers become more skilled and knowledgeable in managing their finances.” The show will also promote the “distinct value” that credit unions bring to the banking experience.

CCUA president Paul Gentile will host the program, which will also include interviews and presentations on topics such as identity theft, how to create a budget and financial literacy.

In the first episode of “Better Banking,” Gentile visits the Rhode Island State House where he talks with Rhode Island State Treasurer Seth Magaziner about efforts underway to bring financial education to high schools and adults across Rhode Island. Another segment will feature an interview with Ellen Ford, president and CEO at the $459 million People’s Credit Union in Middletown, R.I., about her credit union’s financial education efforts.

“Financial literacy is very important to credit unions and the cooperative business model they espouse,” said Gentile in a statement. “Credit unions have long recognized the role of financial education in our society and its ongoing importance in the lives of consumers.”

Gentile said adding a monthly cable TV program to CCUA’s other educational initiatives is “just another way for credit unions to help consumers become better managers of their finances.”

“Better Banking” will debut on the YurView Channel (Cox Cable Channel 4 and 1004) Sunday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. and also air on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. “Better Banking” can also be seen on Cox Cable channels 128 and 1128 in Connecticut and on channels 2 and 1128 in Holland, Mass.
