RICHMOND, Va. – Dorothy “Dot” Hall, the retired president of Virginia CU who began her 42-year-career there as a bookkeeper, died at her home in nearby Hanover Tuesday at 79.
Hall came to Virginia from North Carolina in 1957 to be with her husband while he attended college. She took a job with the credit union soon after. She was hired as the $1 million credit union’s first full-time employee, then later molded the credit union into one of the state’s largest. When she retired in 1999 it had $600 million in assets. VCU now has almost $2 billion in assets.
During her time as president, the board of directors established a college scholarship program in her honor which has provided more than $500,000 to credit union members to help with the cost of college. The credit union’s headquarters building is named in her honor.
Dot became treasurer of the board and general manager of the credit union in 1972. Her title was changed to president in 1986. Dot was one of the few credit union presidents who also served on the board as a member.
