ARVADA, Colo.-Reducing employee turnover starts with the hiring process, contends Eagle Legacy CU, which uses an online test to make sure it brings in talented people who mesh with the CU's culture.
When candidates fill out a job application on the CU's website, they also complete a 15-minute test that helps the HR team better understand the person's skills and ability to become a long-term employee. HR VP Deb Dunning, who reviews the finished tests herself, says the assessments are 99% accurate.
"They tell me whether the person is trustworthy and dependable and whether they have the skills or not," she said. "Also, candidates may be really smart and be able to do the job, but they may not have the personality and skills to fit into our culture. That's what the tests tell me."
The assessment is comprised, primarily, of two main sections. "The first part determines what kind of person I am. If they pass the basic assessment, the second section is about job skills," Dunning explained.
Candidates who pass are invited to interview, and the test also arms interviewers with the right questions. "The assessment pulls out any areas of concern and gives us the questions to ask the person to bring out the right information," said Dunning, who added that the quiz is good at flagging potential issues. "It really helps determine if the person is suitable for the position."
The assessment is structured and hosted by local Synergetic Systems, and ELCU links to the test from its own website. Dunning said the CU pays per assessment, ranging from $25 for entry level personnel to $200 for VPs.
