TEXAS CITY, Texas—George Ballis, former chief executive officer of AMOCO FCU, passed away Dec. 24. He was 85 years old.
Ballis joined AMOCO in 1962 and was named CEO in 1973, running the credit union for 25 years, taking assets from $8 million to $261 million. AMOCO currently has $623 million in assets.
Ballis retired in 1998. In 2004 the AMOCO's board of directors dedicated the building at 2300 Texas Avenue to the former CEO, naming it the George F. Ballis Building.
"While the credit union enjoyed tremendous growth and financial success during Mr. Ballis' tenure, he will be more remembered for the family environment he created and his commitment to serve the members and employees of the credit union," said AMOCO CEO Shawn Bailey. "He was and still is the heart and soul of AMOCO credit union."
