HONOLULU – Elizabeth Burkhart who served on the NCUA Board from 1982 to 1990, died yesterday at age 74 after suffering a severe stroke last Thursday.
Burkhart, who was nominated twice to the NCUA Board by President Ronald Reagan, was a big supporter of student credit unions, which numbered at one at as many as 40. Among her contributions was her advocacy work to engage credit unions and youth. She worked tirelessly with youth, high schools, colleges and universities and can be credited with the start up and expansion of student-run branches as well as student-run credit unions.
A Texas native, with a background in banking and education, Burkhart came to Washington in 1980 as deputy treasurer of the Reagan-Bush Committee and she served as associate deputy administrator at the Veterans Administration prior to joining NCUA.
