RENO, Nev. - The founder of Reno Teacher's Federal Credit Union, John Herbert Marean, has passed away.
Marean was a teacher at Reno High School in 1949 when he and a handful of fellow educators formed the credit union. Reno Teacher's later changed its name to Clear Star Credit Union. In 2009, the CU was merged into $1.8 billion United Federal Credit Union, based in St. Joseph, Mich.
UFCU has branches in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio.
"As a founding member of Reno Teacher's Federal Credit Union, John helped set the path that led to the success we enjoy today as United Federal Credit Union," Nevada Region Vice President Danny DeLaRosa said in a statement. "Today, more than 18,500 UFCU members in Nevada are benefiting from the foresight John exhibited as a young teacher who recognized the value of a credit union for his fellow educators."
Marean is survived by his wife, Rosalind, daughter Alona, and son David, along with their spouses and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice, and his second wife, Sally.
United FCU was chartered in 1949. Today it has more than 130,000 members worldwide.
