NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Though Debbie Matz hasn't officially been confirmed as the next NCUA chair, the transition talks have already begun.
Current NCUA Chair Michael Fryzel said he had lunch with Matz not long prior to the Senate Banking Committee's confirmation hearing. The banking panel is recommending Matz for confirmation, so it is likely the full Senate will vote to approve her. Indeed, Fryzel himself told CU Journal, "it's going to happen."
The lunch meeting was held to help with the transition from Fryzel's chairmanship to Matz's.
While Fryzel was addressing NAFCU's annual meeting, Matz was in the midst of her Senate Confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee. Fryzel said it's expected she will be back in action at NCUA some time in August, which means she'll be in place when the time comes for NCUA's townhall meetings on corporate restructuring.
The meetings will be in Washington, Chicago and California, allowing the agency to get input on how the new corporate rules should look before NCUA issues the proposal for comment. The goal is to have the proposed rules out for comment some time in the fall, with a final rule coming out next spring.
