How Veridian identifies and mentors 'Emerging Leaders'

Veridian Credit Union CEO Monte Berg defines his organization’s culture as one of “service-oriented leadership” where employees are “empowered” to both lead and follow.

“For development, we’re focused on providing resources and opportunities for employees to thrive both in and outside of their workplace,” said Berg. “Veridian’s leadership-development program allows employees to customize resources to fit their own goals and career path.”

Veridian CU was ranked No. 9 overall in the Best Credit Unions to Work For 2018 and No. 3 among CUs with more than $1 billion in assets.

Berg explained that the program was designed as a “conference-style workshop series” that allows employees to explore a variety of leadership topics.

“Individual development plans help them identify positions of interest and action-steps to pursue them,” he said. “And our web-based ‘Talent Management Index’ connects their career plans with internal positions and hiring managers.”

The Waterloo, Iowa-based CU also recently launched its “Emerging Leaders Program” for employees who are interested in management and have a desire to strengthen their leadership skills.

“Participating employees will be paired with a mentor and spend 12 months joining classroom sessions and management team meetings, completing community service hours and working on specially assigned projects,” said Berg. “We’re excited to have the first class of Emerging Leaders start in October 2018.”

Founded in 1934, Veridian Credit Union supports 31 branches and more than 222,000 members with $3.9 billion in assets.
