Legislators in Kansas worried about expansive credit unions plan to look at clarifying membership field standards for state-chartered ones.

At least five Kansas credit unions have statewide fields of membership, and the Kansas House Special Committee on Financial Institutions and Insurance voted Tuesday to hold hearings on the impact of the increased number of credit unions with broad community charters.
Lawmakers also are expected to look at explicit limits on community charters, such as those passed last year in Missouri which restrict community fields of membership to the home county of a credit union's main office and contiguous counties.
The Kansas Legislature's session is scheduled to begin Jan. 14.
