LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Jeffco Credit Union temporarily shut down its online banking service late last week following what it described as “multiple phishing attempts” targeting the credit union’s members.
E-mails sent to members by the phishers fraudulently claimed account access was being suspended or limited and then provided a link to a website that was nearly a duplicate of Jeffco CU’s site. Local media reported that some members fell for the scam and provided their credit card information and also had money taken from their accounts. One member was quoted as saying her debit card was used in Romania for more than $1,000.
Jeffco has created a special e-mail address for members who have received the phony e-mails at phish@jeffcocu.coop. “We are making sure that we get all of these fraudulent websites shutdown as we find out about them. If you should receive any of these emails, please be sure to forward any examples to a special email account we have setup just for these,” the credit union said, reminding members it would never ask anyone to verify information online.
