Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union names new CEO

Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union in Clinton Township has promoted Steve Brewer to be its next president and chief executive.

The $3.2 billion-asset credit union announced that Brewer, who has been with MSGCU for more than 20 years as its chief financial officer, will step into his new roles on Nov. 1. He succeeds Pete Gates, who according to his LinkedIn profile has been at the helm since 1998 and plans to retire this year.

"Looking forward, it was a priority for our board of directors to select a successor who will continue MSGCU's dedication to our mission of promoting financial success for our members. … Steve embraces our strong culture and exceptional service to members," William Cayen, board chair of MSGCU, said in a press release Tuesday.

The credit union recorded a net income of roughly $20.5 million for the first nine months of this year, down from roughly $33.1 million in 2021.

"We are most successful in living our mission when we work together as a team. … We are unified in our focus on our members, the communities we serve and supporting an inclusive and respectful culture at MSGCU," Brewer said in the release. "I look forward to the challenge of the new responsibilities as CEO."
