NCUA promotes Fazio, others to new leadership roles

The National Credit Union Administration on Thursday announced multiple personnel changes, including new roles for some of the agency’s most high-profile figures.

While the NCUA board isn’t changing, Chairman Rodney Hood on Thursday announced Larry Fazio, the agency’s director of examinations and insurance, will take over as NCUA’s new executive director, the highest senior career position there. Fazio succeeds Mark Treichel, who has spent 33 years at NCUA, the least seven of which were as executive director.

Fazio will assume his new duties on March 1, though Treichel will not retire until June 30 in order to oversee a smooth transition.

“Larry’s knowledge and expertise are of tremendous value to the NCUA and for credit unions,” Hood said in a press release. “He was instrumental in helping the agency successfully navigate the failure of the corporate credit unions during the financial crisis a decade ago. He also has led efforts to not only modernize NCUA’s policies to ensure the continued safety and soundness of credit unions, but also enhance the agency’s examination program. I look forward to Larry serving in this role.”

Fazio has been with NCUA since 1991, when he began as a Chicago-based examiner. He subsequently served in a variety of examiner and supervisory roles across the agency.

With Fazio moving up to executive director, Rendell Jones has been promoted from chief financial officer to deputy executive director and chief operating officer. He will assume those duties on Feb. 2. Prior to joining NCUA, Jones worked with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, including a stint as acting deputy director. He has worked for the federal government in some form since 1996.

The regulator on Thursday announced several other staffing moves, including:

  • John Kutchey was named regional director for NCUA’s Eastern Region, having served eight years as NCUA’s deputy executive director.
  • Towanda Brooks, director of the regulator’s Office of Human Resources, was promoted to the position of chief human capital officer.
  • Frank Kressman will continue to serve as acting general counsel. The agency is currently hunting for a permanent successor to Mike McKenna, who retired as general counsel late last year.
  • Linda Dent, who previously served as acting deputy general counsel as part of a short-term arrangement, will continue in that position.
