British Bill Makes Conversion More Difficult

LONDON-The British Parliament is considering a bill that would make it more difficult to switch charters from a mutual business into a for-profit business. The bill would eliminate the ability of a small number of members of a mutual association, including credit unions and provident societies, to force the conversion. Under current law, mutual organizations can change their status provided three-fourths of the members present at a meeting agree to a change.

NCUA Adds Gail Galvan As New Lobbyist

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA said it has hired Gail Galvan, a lobbyist for auditor KPMG Peat Marwick, as its congressional lobbyist. Galvan is scheduled to join the agency Feb. 11. She will serve as junior lobbyist under Public and Congressional Affairs Director Clifford Northup.

The position has been vacant since the February 2001 departure of Elizabeth Wirick.
