OLYMPIA, Wash. – The strong storm that roared through the Pacific Northwest earlier this week caused several credit unions in Oregon and Washington to close.
Some of the heaviest damage occurred in Lewis County, Wash., where Interstate 5, the main north-south motor link, was under 10 feet of water in parts. TwinStar CU, headquartered here, said its branches in Centralia and Chehalis are operating normally and are not flooded, although the deep floodwaters were nearby. CEO Marshall Ellison told the Credit Union Journal the Chehalis branch is at a high point in the city, so it was spared, although a company car was flooded by four feet of water. Three TwinStar branches were closed for two days due to electricity outages.
Laura Wieking, director of communications for the CU Association of Oregon, said some CUs in the state have experienced power outages, while others were closed for a time due to local flooding.
