WASHINGTON – The Senate last night voted confirmation of former Oregon Senator Richard Metsger to the NCUA Board, just as a second vacancy on the three-member panel opened up.

Metsger’s confirmation gives the panel two Democrats, along with Chairman Debbie Matz, with the six-year term for the lone Republican, Michael Fryzel expiring today. Fryzel told the Credit Union Journal yesterday he plans to continue to serve until a successor is seated.

The 61-year-old Metsger is owner of Parakletos Strategic Public Affairs LL in Portland and served eight years on the board of OnPoint CU, the state’s largest credit union.

Metsger served eight years in the state Senate and once chaired the Senate Finance Committee, and also worked as an anchorman on local TV.

Metsger fills a vacancy on the Board created when Gigi Hyland, whose six-year term expired last August, left in October. That means the nominal six-year term has five years remaining and expires on  Aug. 2, 2017.
