MINNEAPOLIS – Target yesterday announced it has introduced gift cards made of Mirel plastic, which is biodegradable.

The cards, introduced at all 1,600 Target stores, are made by Metabolix Inc., a chemical company focused on creating environmentally friendly products. Metabolix, based in Bambridge, Mass., makes Mirel from corn.
Metabolix says it also is working with Decatur, Ill.-based agricultural processor Archer Daniels Midland Co. to open a Mirel manufacturing plant in Clinton, Iowa, by late next year. The plant would produce up to 110 million pounds of Mirel annually.
