AUSTIN, Texas – Police evacuated a branch of LCRA CU yesterday morning after a teller called in a phony bomb threat to cover up his theft.
The bomb threat resulted in an emergency response from the Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department and LCRA security, as credit union employees were evacuated from the building.
The teller, identified as Nathaniel Hamilton, initially told police he had been passed a note from an unknown suspect while in the restroom. The note stated the presence of a bomb and that the suspect wanted a specific amount of money to be delivered to the bathroom. Hamilton said he followed the note’s instructions and delivered the money as instructed, then went back to the teller station and pushed the silent alarm.
He later confessed to staging the bomb threat to cover up the fact he had been stealing money from the credit union.
Hamilton was arrested and charged with robbery by threat, a second-degree felony. His bond was set at $25,000.
