Texas Passes Landmark Financial LiteracyBill

AUSTIN, Texas - (05/24/05) -- The state legislature last weekpassed a bill with strong support from the credit union lobby thatwill require every student to pass a financial education classbefore graduating from high school. The bill, which is expected tobe signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry, will require schooldistricts to incorporate financial literacy into any course meetinga requirement for economics credit. The Texas CU League and theTexas Jump$tart Coalition, a financial literacy project sponsoredby the Texas CU Foundation, lobbied the legislature on behalf ofthe bill.
