Thieves Try Unsuccessfully To Smash And Grab CU ATM

SAN DIEGO -- Thieves attempted to steal Cabrillo CU ATM in Scripps Ranch early Thursday by ramming a stolen U-Haul truck against it but ran off on foot when the vehicle became stuck, according to police.

The thieves backed the truck up against an ATM kiosk around 3:30 am, causing the U- Haul's bumper to become wedged into the structure, police said. One of the thieves apparently cut himself at the scene and left blood evidence.

Investigators are expected to attempt DNA testing on the blood to see if they can find a match in a criminal database.

This is the second attempt to steal a credit union ATM this week. Monday, thieves tried to rip out the machine at the USE CU in Mission Valley.
