At Mountain America Credit Union (MACU), senior leadership is accessible to all 1,666 employees, including those newly hired. And while formal tools are in place for employees to voice concerns and submit feedback, many times these exchanges are handled in person at morning meetings or special lunches.
"On their first day of employment, our new hires are provided with lunch hosted by a member of the senior leadership team," said MACU's AVP of Public Relations Bryan Packer. "Our CEO is frequently the one who joins them."
A recently hired employed relayed to Packer: "I worked at my other company for three years and I didn't even know who the CEO was. And here, on the first day, I met Sterling Nielsen [CEO] and had lunch with him. That's different."
MACU places great importance on continuing education. To this end, all employees, even those no longer employed with the credit union, have access to the credit union's Career Advancement Program (CAP).
"We invest heavily in the training and engagement of our employees," said Packer. "Because we offer an exceptional employment experience, they offer an exceptional experience for our members."
In many instances, employees go the extra mile for members. In one case, an employee helped a member with finances so they could continue their dream of having a child. After the experience, the employee stated: "This is so much more than a job. I help change lives, and it's remarkable." And Packer noted that one member was so inspired by an employee that he sought a position with MACU and was eventually hired.
"By allowing our employees to place the needs of members first, as opposed to pushing sales that may or may not meet member needs, we provide opportunities for employees to make a difference," said Packer.
Founded in 1934, the CU currently operates 84 branches serving more than 522,000 members.
