The $2.5 billion institution was, until last year, an airlines credit union. It converted to a community charter serving some 3 million people in the Twin Cities area. Under its state charter it can continue to be both a community-based and select group credit union serving air industry groups.

Chartered in 1938 to serve employees of Northwest Airlines, the credit union has established a broad range of industry partnerships, including agreements with regional airlines such as Mesaba Aviation, Pinnacle Airlines, Compass Airlines, Republic Airways and Colgan Airlines. In addition, Wings Financial has partnerships with major airlines such as JetBlue Airways and AirTran Airways.
