'Good' Theme For International CU Day
MADISON, Wis.-The World Council of Credit Unions has announced the 2013 International Credit Union (ICU) Day theme will be "Credit Unions Unite for Good: A Better Way." The theme is designed to emphasize the benefits of cooperation among CUs worldwide. ICU Day will be celebrated on Oct. 17.
Lending Awards Accepting Apps
MADISON, Wis.-Entries are being accepted for the 14th annual Excellence in Lending Awards, which recognizes outstanding lending results and practices. The Excellence in Lending Awards identify and share examples of lending excellence by recognizing individual CUs. The awards are sponsored by CUNA Mutual and the CUNA Lending Council. Krall Wins 'CU Builder' Award
ST. PAUL, Minn.-Gail Krall, a 34-year leader of Minnesota Power Employees CU in Duluth, has been presented with the Minnesota CU Foundation's (MnCUF's) Credit Union Builder Award, which recognizes those who have dedicated time and energy to building the CU movement. Krall has been president/CEO of MPECU since 1979, overseeing growth to $85 million from $1.9 million.
Arena To Be Named For CFE
ORLANDOC-FE Federal Credit Union has acquired the naming rights to the UCF arena used by the University of Central Florida. The 10,000-seat facility now will be known as the CFE Arena. The arena, which opened in 2007, hosts UCF men's and women's basketball games, concerts, UCF and high school commencement ceremonies. Men's basketball alone has attracted 538,457 fans since the arena opened. UCF will receive $3.95 million over seven years as part of the naming rights agreement. In November 2011, CFE acquired UCF FCU with an on-campus location.
Three CUs Are Liquidated
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA has shuttered several CUs. The agency has liquidated Electrical Workers #527 CU in Texas City, Texas. The $622,857 CU had just 527 members. It was chartered in 1963 to serve electrical workers in the local market. All members will have their deposits refunded up to $250,000 over the next week, according to the agency, which said the CU was insolvent with no prospect of restoring viable operations. NCUA also liquidated $1.6-million NCP Community Development FCU in Virginia Beach, Va., with Chartway FCU assuming its member shares. In Selma, Ala., NCUA liquidated tiny $88,359 First Kingdom Community FCU, with Riverdale CU assuming shares.
Another CU Under 'Partner' Umbrella
ARVADA, Colo.-Partner Colorado CU said it has received member and regulatory approval to merge with HealthONE FCU in Denver. HealthONE will continue on, however, as a brand beneath the Partner Colorado umbrella, which was created to assist with increasing niche markets of small credit unions. Partner Colorado is comprised Eagle Legacy, Denver Water and now, HealthONE Credit Unions. Kim Oliver, president of two-branch HealthONE FCU, will remain as VP of Marketing and Business Development for all niche markets under the Partner Colorado umbrella.
New CEOs Taking The Reins
LEOMINSTER, Mass.-John O'Brien has been named president/CEO of $613-million Leominster CU. O'Brien was previously SVP-lending. In Wichita, Jane Hammil has been named CEO of $78.6-million Wichita FCU, replacing the retiring Wayne Warfel. In Largo, Md., Beverly Zook has been promoted to CEO of the $107-million Money One FCU, succeeding Debra Connors.
Leaders Elected, Honored In Penn.
HARRISBURG, Penn.-Marie LaVelle, president/CEO of $53-million Westmoreland Community FCU, has been elected chair of the Pennsylvania CU Association. Louise Lingenfelser, CEO of ClearChoice FCU in Wyomissing, has been elected vice chair.
Meanwhile, David Ackerman, president/CEO of USX FCU, was named winner of the William W. Pratt Lifetime Achievement Award for the 2013 Professional of the Year by the PCUA. Dr. C. Ross McFarland, a volunteer with Tri-County Area FCU, was named winner of the Joseph A. Moore Award for the 2013 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.
