Orr Named Director of the Year
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii-Dr. Dorothy J. Orr, chairman of BrightStar Credit Union, Sunrise, Fla., has been named the 2007 CUES Director of the Year. Orr has served on the board for more than 19 years and been chair since 1988. She is a frequent speaker on the benefits of CU membership and participant in hiking the Hill. In recognition of the award, CUES will donate $250 to a charitable organization on Orr’s behalf.
NAFCU Board Tours FinCEN
ARLINGTON, Va.–Members of the NAFCU board toured the headquarters of Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) last week. The visit included a discussion with FinCEN Director James H. Freis Jr. Freis underscored the contributions of CUs to law enforcement agencies and FinCEN, and said the information submitted as part of BSA compliance is used by law enforcement.
Utah’s Peck To NASCUS Board
ARLINGTON, Va.–Orla Beth Peck, supervisor of credit unions for the Utah Department of Financial Institutions, has been named to the NASCUS Board of Directors.
Peck will fill an unexpired term ending September 2008 created by the resignation of California’s Beth Dooley, who left the DFI to become CEO at Educational Employees Credit Union in Fresno, Calif.
Illinois League Backs MLK Project
NAPERVILLE, Ill.–The Illinois Credit Union System has become a founding sponsor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project with a $5,000 gift to the project’s foundation. The Memorial Foundation is seeking to raise $100 million for the memorial to be build on the National Mall in Washington.
Altier Launches Prepaid Gift Cards
TEMPE, Ariz.–The $193-million Altier CU has begun offering VISA prepaid gift cards to its 29,000 members for $3. The Altier CU VISA Gift Card has a $1,000 prepaid limit and can be used to access the prepaid amount from an ATM machine everywhere VISA is accepted. Separately, its VISA Debit Card Rewards Program is offering one point for every $2 spent. Rewards start at 1,500 points.
