Maine CU Pioneer, Morin, Dies

WESTBROOK, Maine-Jeannette G. Morin, who was frequently referred to as the "Mother of the Maine Credit Union Movement," has died. Ms. Morin, 90, was active in credit unions for six decades. From 1944-1974, she was the manager-treasurer of St. John's (Brunswick) FCU (now known as Atlantic Regional FCU). She organized eight credit unions in Maine, was active in the league, and was only the third woman in the country to be elected as president of a league when she was named to that post in Maine in 1960. In 1973, Ms. Morin was the fifth person in the country to receive a special Merit Award from NCUA honoring her "for her outstanding and special contributions to the Credit Union Movement." Prior to retiring in 2001, she also acted as historian for the Maine league for 56 years and had a Maine league chapter named in her honor.

NCUA Slates Budget Briefing

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA has scheduled its fourth annual Budget Briefing and Public Forum for Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Alexandria headquarters boardroom. The review of the 2005 budget will be led by NCUA Executive Director Len Skiles.

Member's $15K Check Is Found

SALEM, Ore.-A member of Oregon Territory FCU was resting easier after a city employee found a $15,000 check made out to him-blowing along the sidewalk inside an envelope. Since the check was drawn on the credit union, the finder brought it over to see if credit union officials could track down the owner. The recipient apparently did not know it was missing and was inside a local bank ready to deposit it when he was notified of the missing check.

TCFCU Is Now FivePoint CU

PORT ARTHUR, Texas-Texaco Community FCU has changed its name to FivePoint Credit Union and is using the slogan, "America's Financial Convenience Store." The name reflects the credit union's sponsor's heritage (Texaco's symbol is a five-pointed star) and that the name also is representative of five other points of strength. The credit union is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in five counties.
