Meritrust CU, Wichita, Kan., donated bicycles to 36 Littles in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Special ceremonies were held at halftime of a men’s basketball games at Wichita State University, and at a women’s basketball game at the University of Kansas.

Royal CU, Eau Claire, Wis., celebrated the grand opening of its new location in Apple Valley, Minn., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Separately, Royal CU partnered with the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2016-17 men’s basketball and men’s hockey seasons.

Phoenix-based Desert Schools FCU provided the largest donation ever to Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s formal school program, 1 Darn Cool School, more than $565,000.

St. Mary’s Bank, Manchester, N.H., donated $1,000 to the Bhutanese Community of New Hampshire in Manchester and Concord to further BCNH’s mental health services program.

Bite of Reality

The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation’s Bite of Reality program enjoyed a successful 2016, with a new app and reaching more than 11,000 students throughout California and Nevada (an increase of 2,000 from 2015). Some 110 fairs were held in the two states, and 50 credit unions hosted or co-hosted events, an increase of 10 from 2015.

Dallas-based Neighborhood CU surprised Gabrielle N. of Farmers Branch, Texas, with a check for $49,999.99 representing the ninth-annual Prize Savings Account grand prize. A member since 1998, Gabrielle puts a portion of each and every paycheck into her savings account.

NuMark CU, Joliet, Ill., collected donations of canned food and other non-perishable items, and cash donations, to benefit the Northern Illinois Food Bank. In total, more than 1,000 lbs. of food items and more than $2,000 in cash was collected.

Firefly Burnsville, Minn., partnered with Burnsville High School’s DECA program and Memorial Blood Centers to host a high school blood drive that collected 176 units of blood, equating to 436 potential lives saved.
