'Michiana' expansion

St. Joseph, Mich.-based United FCU broke ground on its first branch in Mishawaka, Ind. The project is the continuation of an expansion in the region known as "Michiana" -- straddling the borders of Michigan and Indiana -- that eventually will include six branches in St. Joseph County.

New branch opening

Kensington, Md.-based Signal Financial FCU opened its newest branch on New York Avenue in Washington, D.C. The CU teamed up with architecture firm Gensler to create a unique banking experience. The new branch is of the few credit union branches in downtown Washington that is open to the public and not housed in an access-controlled building.

Columbia CU, Vancouver, Wash., was honored with a Corporate Philanthropy Award. The award was announced at the Portland Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy Luncheon. This is the second time Columbia Credit Union has been recognized with this award.

Hughes FCU, Tucson, Ariz., received a national excellence award for outstanding approaches to technology. The CUNA Technology Council awarded Hughes for its entry entitled “Using Biometrics to Build an Efficient Team and Better Member Experiences,” describing how Hughes successfully piloted a palm authentication system to replace passwords.

Hurricane relief donation

Altura CU, Riverside, Calif., made donations totaling $15,000 to assist those impacted by last fall’s hurricanes, the Las Vegas shooting and the fires in Northern California: $5,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey victims, $5,000 to the Las Vegas Victims Fund, and $5,000 to the National Credit Union Foundation to assist credit union employees directly impacted by the wildfires in Northern California.
