'Michiana' expansion
St. Joseph, Mich.-based United FCU broke ground on its first branch in Mishawaka, Ind. The project is the continuation of an expansion in the region known as "Michiana" -- straddling the borders of Michigan and Indiana -- that eventually will include six branches in St. Joseph County.
Health Innovator award
For its commitment to offering physical, emotional, financial and social well-being programs to its employees, St. Mary’s Bank, Manchester, N.H., received the Health Innovator Award from NH Business Review and Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare.
Volunteers
Employees of Michigan Legacy CU, Pontiac, Mich., volunteered their time to Forgotten Harvest, saving more than 8,000 lbs. of food.
'KidsVention'
Scott Arkills, president and CEO of Silver State Schools CU, Las Vegas, participated in “KidsVention.” The event, put on by Clark County School District and Voices in Voting, provides enhanced social studies curriculum for local fifth and seventh graders. The annual event teaches students about the American political system and voting process.
Presenting sponsor
Scott CU, Edwardsville, Ill., presented a $1,700 check to representatives from the Collinsville Main Street Community Association to be the presenting sponsor of its 2017 Fall Festival.
Groundbreaking ceremony
Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Peach State FCU celebrated the future home of its newest branch in downtown Lawrenceville with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by credit union board and staff members, plus representatives from the city.
New branch opening
Kensington, Md.-based Signal Financial FCU opened its newest branch on New York Avenue in Washington, D.C. The CU teamed up with architecture firm Gensler to create a unique banking experience. The new branch is of the few credit union branches in downtown Washington that is open to the public and not housed in an access-controlled building.
Corporate philanthropy honors
Columbia CU, Vancouver, Wash., was honored with a Corporate Philanthropy Award. The award was announced at the Portland Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy Luncheon. This is the second time Columbia Credit Union has been recognized with this award.

A community advocate
John Hamilton, MECU of Baltimore’s president and CEO, received the Community Advocate Award from the Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce. The Community Advocate Award recognizes an individual of a member organization who has shown their commitment to build a stronger Baltimore by serving the community in a distinguished manner.
Ribbon-cutting ceremony
San Diego-based North Island CU held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and week-long celebration to mark the opening of its new North County retail branch, located in the Camino Village Plaza in Encinitas, Calif. With its expansion into North San Diego County, North Island now offers 11 branches across the greater San Diego area.
Team Enrichment Day
Kellogg Community CU, Battle Creek, Mich., participated in a United Way Pop-Up Giving event during the CU’s annual Team Enrichment Day. Three organizations pitched their causes and the KCCU Team voted for Prevention Works, Inc., of Kalamazoo to receive $1,000.
CUNA Tech Council recognition
Hughes FCU, Tucson, Ariz., received a national excellence award for outstanding approaches to technology. The CUNA Technology Council awarded Hughes for its entry entitled “Using Biometrics to Build an Efficient Team and Better Member Experiences,” describing how Hughes successfully piloted a palm authentication system to replace passwords.
Hurricane relief donation
Altura CU, Riverside, Calif., made donations totaling $15,000 to assist those impacted by last fall’s hurricanes, the Las Vegas shooting and the fires in Northern California: $5,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey victims, $5,000 to the Las Vegas Victims Fund, and $5,000 to the National Credit Union Foundation to assist credit union employees directly impacted by the wildfires in Northern California.

Helping educators
FORUM Credit Union, Fishers, Ind., and its FORUM Foundation awarded nearly $25,000 in Educator Grants to 17 educators throughout central Indiana for the 2017-2018 school year.
