Giving kids tech tools to succeed

Ascentra CU, Bettendorf, Iowa, and its Charitable Foundation provided a grant of $11,745 for the purchase of 75 Chromebooks that were used during Spring Forward’s Summer Enrichment Camps for children entering kindergarten through 7th grade at several local schools.

MADD donation and helping kids in crisis

San Antonio-based Security Service FCU and its charitable foundation presented Mothers Against Drunk Driving South Texas with a $2,000 donation to assist the Power of Youth outreach program for middle school and high school students. Separately, the Security Service Charitable Foundation gave $5,000 to Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives to improve housing facilities for children in crisis.

Increased food bank donation

More than 55 employees and family members representing First Financial of Maryland FCU, Lutherville, Md., sorted and bagged 26,500 lbs. of potatoes for the less fortunate via West Virginia and Western Maryland food banks. This was up from the 20,000 lbs. the year earlier.

Firefly CU saves lives

Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn., partnered with Memorial Blood Centers to host a blood drive. Donors at Firefly’s latest drive helped collect 18 whole blood cell units, which will have the potential to save up to 42 lives in the community.

Las Vegas-based Silver State Schools CU selected the winners of the 32nd annual Happy Times Art Contest. The winners, representing K-12 students in Southern Nevada, have their art featured in the 2018 Happy Times Calendar, produced by SSSCU.

Millionaire's Club and school partnerships

Municipal Employees CU of Baltimore sponsored its third Baltimore City Millionaire's Club financial literacy program at the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women. Separately, the MECU Foundation presented $35,000 to CollegeBound Foundation, nine Baltimore partner schools and Credit Unions for Kids.

Supporting local nonprofits

In an effort to support the work of local organizations that serve the areas of Suffolk Federal branch locations, the Medford, N.Y.-based CU identifies nonprofit organizations to support financially: $1,000 each to the Eastport Fire Department and the Greater Sayville Food Pantry.

Dollar-for-dollar donation match

Employees of Dover FCU, Dover, Del., raised money for the Interfaith Mission, and the CU matched dollar-for-dollar, for a total donation of $1,062. Interfaith Mission is a community organization addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of homeless men in the Greater Dover area by providing them with shelter.

Recognizing veterans

Hoosier Hills CU, Bedford, Ind., joined the first 100 donors of the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was founded in 2013 “to publicly emphasize the honor brought to our state and nation by the sacrifice of Indiana military veterans and their families.”
