SDCCU breaks its own record

San Diego County CU broke its existing Guinness World Records title and achieved a new record at the 2017 SDCCU Super Shred Event. SDCCU tore through its previous record for the most paper collected in 24 hours with the collection of 898,931 lbs. (the 5th year in a row the event set a Guinness record), and established a new mark for most paper shredded in 8 hours.

SEFCU gives back

SEFCU, Albany, N.Y., pledged $100,000 over three years to benefit the Homeless and Travelers’ Aid Society’s Feed and Read program for children in City of Albany Public Schools. The program will benefit 625 elementary and middle school children by providing 12 pounds of food to them every Friday afternoon during the academic year.

The Mountain West Credit Union Foundation presented its annual credit union industry awards at the 10th Annual Star Gala held at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver. Pima FCU, Tucson, Ariz., was the Community Impact Award winner, Mike Williams, CEO of Colorado CU, Littleton, Colo., won the Distinguished Leader Award, and Angel Phillips (pictured) of Reliant FCU, Casper, Wyo., won the Emerging Leader Award.

Suffolk Federal celebrates 50 years

In Medford, N.Y., as part of Suffolk Federal’s 50th anniversary celebration, the CU has hosted a “Celebrate & Do Good” campaign each month. For a $5 donation, members receive a contest raffle ticket. Donations collected have exceeded $4,100 and will benefit Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank located in Hauppauge. Ed Fitzgerald, a Suffolk Federal member of nearly 40 years, was the winner of the Eastport branch contest.

Desjardins recognition for MSUFCU

A partner in philanthropy

Jacksonville-based First Florida CU was named one of the top Partners in Philanthropy by the Jacksonville Business Journal. The CU was recognized for its extensive nonprofit work, including providing financial education to nearly 1,000 local youth, and donating nearly $30,000 and more than 1,200 volunteer hours to charitable initiatives across the state.

Ideal's golf tourney grows and gives back

A strong showing of support helped Woodbury, Minn.-based Ideal CU’s Community Foundation raise $25,560 at its eighth annual golf tournament, an increase of $2,300 from the previous year. The event, held at StoneRidge Golf Course in Stillwater, attracted 103 golfers and 36 sponsors. The CU’s foundation will use the funds to aid local education, food shelf and community initiatives.

Scholarships awarded

San Dimas, Calif.-based Christian Community CU’s “Scholarships for Success” program awarded $69,500 in scholarships to 70 students in 2017. Student members were selected based on their essay, academic excellence, extra-curricular activities and references. Since the program began in 1999, the CU has awarded $815,000 in scholarships.

Credit Union of America, Wichita, Kan., awarded Teacher Grant … Ideas Financed grants totaling $9,970 to 24 teachers across seven school districts. Grants included traditional requests for books, calculators and flexible seating, plus some unique requests for bee bots, escape and STEM boxes and a bottle cap mural.

In Maple Grove, Minn., TopLine FCU’s Foundation awarded $10,000 in scholarships to 16 TopLine members who are continuing their education: four $1,000 scholarships and 12 $500 scholarships.

TBA CU, Traverse City, Mich., awarded a Classroom Improvement Grant to West Middle School. The grant will be used to purchase a set of 35 books titled Agentes Secretos y el Mural de Picasso, which translates to Secret Agents and the Picasso Mural. The books teach students new Spanish vocabulary while introducing them to the culture and history of Spain.

A helping hand after the hurricanes

Huntsville, Ala.-based Redstone FCU matched employee donations to CUAid.coop for a total donation of $10,000 to assist credit union staff affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Greater Nevada CU, Carson City, Nev., donated $75,000 to the National Credit Union Foundation to support the relief efforts for credit union employees in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Pen Air FCU, Pensacola, Fla., donated $25,000 to CUAid to assist victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Pacific Service CU, Concord, Calif., donated $7,500 to help victims of the hurricanes: $2,500 to the American Red Cross, $2,500 to Americares and $2,500 to DirectRelief.
