1st Union promotes some senior execs.

First Union Corp., Charlotte, N.C., announced promotions for senior level executives in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Roanoke.

David M. Carroll, vice chairman and general banking group executive of First Union National Bank of Virginia since March 1993, has been named president, head of general banking, and a director of Atlanta-based First Union National Bank of Georgia.

The Georgia bank has been without a president since Benjamin P. Jenkins 3d was promoted to president and chief operating officer of First Union's Virginia bank after the acquisition of Roanoke-based Dominion Bank-shares in March 1993.

Robert W. Helms, chief commercial banking executive for First Union National Bank of North Carolina, Charlotte, will succeed Mr. Carroll as vice chairman and head of general banking in Virginia.

James K. Buchanan, chief financial officer of the North Carolina bank, will succeed Mr. Helms as chief commercial banking executive in North Carolina.

No successor has been named to Mr. Buchanan's North Carolina post.
