Alliance in N.Y. to Eliminate 98 Jobs After Merger

Alliance Bank in Syracuse, N.Y., has warned that almost 100 jobs would be eliminated after its merger with NBT Bank next year.

Forty-two jobs at Alliance's headquarters and 56 at its operations center in Oneida, N.Y., would be cut because the deal would make them redundant, Alliance said Friday.

In October NBT Bancorp (NBTB) in Norwich, N.Y., announced it would buy Alliance Financial (ALNC) for $233 million. The transaction is expected to close in March 2013.

"This will be the elimination of duplicate positions, which is typical any time two organizations merge," Colleen K. Lefeve, senior vice president of human resources for Alliance Bank, said in a news release. "NBT and Alliance are making every effort to minimize the impact of the elimination of these positions, including holding open other positions that could potentially be filled by displaced employees."

No Alliance branches are expected to be closed and no customer-service positions should be affected by the planned layoffs, Jack H. Webb, Alliance's president and chief executive, said in a news release.

Alliance has $1.4 billion of assets, and NBT has $6 billion.
