Ally Bank, the direct bank subsidiary of Ally Financial in Midvale, Utah, has launched an internally developed mobile banking app designed for larger screen iPad devices.

The app is currently available for iOS 7 devices and an iOS 8 update will be launched this fall, the company said in a press release Wednesday.

Ally's iPad app offers the features of the bank's smartphone apps as well as new elements, such as the ability to research products, view rates and open a new account. Customers will now have access to an activity calendar that highlights key scheduled transactions in a monthly view. They will also be able to track CD interest accrued through a new CD growth chart.

Ally's developers used the same basic design for the bank's iPhone app, the new iPad app, and a website redesign that will go live later this year. The digital banking interface includes a simplified account dashboard that highlights key balance information at login, drop-down menus, tap-friendly links and animated interactions.

Research shows tablet sales are expected to overtake PC sales, with one third of the total U.S. population using tablets by 2015, the bank stated in its release. And since nearly one-third of Ally Bank customers are engaged in mobile banking, the iPad app is designed to attract "consumers, who increasingly are shifting their device preferences toward tablets," said Diane Morais, Ally Bank deposits and line of business integration executive.

"Our goal is simple: make it easy for customers to do business with Ally Bank, in any manner they prefer, whether it's from a desktop computer, smartphone or tablet," she said.
