Commonwealth Bank of Australia, design firm IDEO and technology company Wincor Nixdorf have partnered to launch a new point-of-sale payment acceptance device.

The product is an open Android tablet that can download apps from a business app store and then accept secure payment, Wincor Nixdorf said Tuesday. It complements existing point-of-sale systems and uses an open platform with a secure locked-down payment capability.

According to its website, Commonwealth Bank is offering an open platform that it calls Pi.

The bank is developing a range of apps for Pi designed for business payment processes. For example, the bank has a “split the bill” app that lets merchants to accept multiple payments for one bill.
