The Jackson, Miss., wireless carrier Cellular South Inc. announced Monday that BancorpSouth Inc. customers can now download a mobile banking application to their phones.
BancorpSouth in Tupelo, Miss., was one of the first to offer mobile banking services. The offering is a downloadable application from the Firethorn Holdings LLC unit of the mobile phone hardware and software provider Qualcomm Inc.
Cellular South, the nation's largest privately held wireless provider, tested a mobile payment service last summer, with Bank of America Corp., ViVOtech Inc., and Mpact Inc., using handsets from Kyocera Wireless equipped with near-field communications chips to make contactless payments at the point of sale.
