BankAmerica Names Helmly As President of A Florida Market

BankAmerica Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., has promoted Bill Helmly to president of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast market in its NationsBank Florida unit.

He is to manage activities in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties.

Mr. Helmly had been a NationsBank senior vice president and market executive in its private-client group for this region and will remain in Palm Beach. He joined a predecessor of the company, C&S National, in 1969 as the Charleston, S.C., area executive and senior commercial lender, and he has held other executive posts at NationsBank in the Carolinas.

As Palm Beach market president he succeeded Mike Strickland. Mr. Strickland, who was a 25-year veteran of Barnett Banks Inc. and NationsBank, left to join Republic Security Bank as its chief banking officer in West Palm Beach.

He had held the market president job in Palm Beach since October 1997, two months after NationsBank announced its deal to buy Barnett. Before that he had been chairman, president, and CEO of Barnett Bank of Palm Beach County since 1985 and, still earlier, president and CEO of Barnett Bank of Central Florida in Orlando.
