Bankers Trust launches 3-class commodity index.

NEW YORK -- Bankers Trust New York Corp. Monday launched the Bankers Trust Commodity Index, creating a benchmark for investment in the commodities markets and an alternative to traditional bond and equity holdings.

The index is a combination of three classes of commodities - energy, which accounts for 46% of the total; base metals, which accounts for 22%; and precious metals, 32%.

"The simplicity of the BTCI index and the significant liquidity of the underlying components will provide increased flexibility and efficiency in the structuring of the products we plan to offer," said Bruce Garner, who is vice president, commodity derivatives, at Bankers Trust.

Bankers Trust said it would offer index-linked notes, options, forwards, and other derivative products, in a wide range of maturities.

Bloomberg Financial Markets will carry the index on its terminals.
