To cater to people who do not have an Apple Inc. iPhone or Google Inc. Android smartphone, TD Bank has introduced a mobile banking and bill-pay application for Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry devices.
Customers have been requesting a BlackBerry version of TD's app, which has been available on iPhone and Android devices since August, a TD representative said. The Portland, Maine, unit of Toronto-Dominion Bank would not say how many of its customers are BlackBerry users. The BlackBerry app was announced last week.
The application lets customers pay bills; check deposit, loan and credit card balances; transfer funds; find branch sites and automated teller machines; view pending transactions and account histories and contact the bank's live customer service centers, among other functions.
Customers can also use the app to enroll in TD Debit Card Advance, its overdraft-protection service. The opt-in service lets the bank approve an ATM withdrawal or debit card purchase when insufficient funds are available in the account.
Ron Shevlin, a senior analyst at Aite Group LLC in Boston, said, "BlackBerry sales are lagging, but the installed base of BlackBerry customers is pretty high."
