Banks in the central and southeast regions of the country have a way with small business lending.

According to information gleaned from the annual survey of small business loans taken from call reports every June 30, banks in these two regions accounted for 41% of small loans to businesses nationwide. Combined, the two regions accounted for $64.8 billion of the $158.1 billion in loans of less than $1 million to businesses outstanding at June 30, the most recent reporting period for these loans.

Because the June 30 data are in just the second such annual report, bankers are still grappling with what they should include as loans to small companies. As a result, a comparison of data between 1993 and 1994 is not completely reliable.

Despite these shortcomings, the 1994 numbers, shown in the series of graphs and tables on this page, indicate which regions, and which banks, are making the most small loans. Not surprisingly, it was Banc One Corp. in the central region, and NationsBank Corp., in the Southeast, that held the largest dollar volume of these small business loans at June 30. n Questions?
