The Reston, Va., online market research firm said that 67.1% of Canadian Internet users performed online banking activities in April, more than in any other of the 37 global markets that it monitored.

Among other English-speaking countries, 49.5% of Internet users in the United Kingdom banked online, 44.4% in the United States, and 41.7% in Australia, comScore said.

Of Canada's nearly 24 million Internet users, 15.5 million visited a banking site in April, comScore said. Royal Bank of Canada, the nation's largest bank by assets, had 4.6 million visitors; Toronto-Dominion Bank had 4.5 million; and Bank of Montreal had 3 million.

Brent Bernie, the president of the company's comScore Canada unit, said in a press release, "Because the Canadian online banking sector is so developed and competition already so fierce, banks need to closely examine how they are meeting the needs of their consumers online if they are to achieve customer growth and retention through this increasingly important channel."
