Capital City Buying 5 First Union Branches

Capital City Bank Group Inc. of Tallahassee, Fla. is buying five First Union Corp. branches in Georgia for an undisclosed sum.

The deal, announced Thursday, is expected to close in the first quarter. It is Capital City's second recent deal in Georgia. Last week the $1.5 billion-asset company announced that it would buy $155 million-asset First Bankshares of West Point for $17.3 million.

Four of the branches First Union is selling are in Macon and the fifth is in Waynesboro. Capital City would gain $109 million of deposits and $23 million of consumer loans.
