Card Briefs: 1st Data Affiliate to Offer Internet System

CommerceWave Inc. said a First Data Corp. merchant processing affiliate has agreed to offer the MerchantWave electronic commerce system for Internet retailing.

CommerceWave, which emphasizes the relatively low cost, easy installation, and "transaction-ready" nature of MerchantWave, began shipping the product in January. The company said it hoped to rely on leading transaction processors for marketing and distribution.

Under the agreement, Unified Merchant Services, which is owned by First Data and NationsBank, will make MerchantWave available to any of its more than 50,000 customers that want to set up shop on the World Wide Web.

CommerceWave would be the Internet commerce systems integrator for customers referred by Unified.

"We anticipate tremendous opportunity in Internet commerce and want to support our customers in this arena," said O.B. Rawls 4th, president of Atlanta-based Unified.

"Working with strong partners like CommerceWave will enable us to provide secure, transaction-ready electronic commerce services."
