Citigroup Inc. veteran Lisa Caputo is leaving the firm to join The Travelers Cos. as an executive vice president for marketing and communications.

Caputo, who transitioned into the corporate world from the political scene — she was the communications director for Hillary Clinton when Clinton was first lady — most recently was a managing director and senior banker in the public sector group of Citi's institutional clients business.

From 2000 to 2010, Caputo was chairman and chief executive of Women & Co., a Citi financial services program she shepherded from the concept stage to a business line with assets in the tens of billions. She also handled global marketing and corporate affairs for Citi during the height of the financial crisis.

"She spearheaded our efforts through a challenging period for our company, and her strategic counsel was invaluable," Citi CEO Vikram Pandit and Vice Chairman Lew Kaden wrote in an employee memo obtained by American Banker.

Caputo also had co-chaired Women4Citi, a corporate-wide women's initiative, for the past three years.
