Compass Sets Vote Date for BBVA Deal

Compass Bancshares Inc. said shareholders will meet Aug 8 to vote on the $34.4 billion-asset Birmingham, Ala., company's deal to sell itself to Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA of Madrid.

In a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Compass also said that it began considering its strategic options in November. The $544 billion-asset BBVA first contacted Compass in January.

The filing mentioned no other suitors.

BBVA agreed to buy Compass in February for $9.6 billion and has said it expects to close the deal in September.
