The Nov. 8 story "MetLife, Hancock Stocks Climb as Earnings Soar" on page 19 understated the year-to-year rise in earnings at John Hancock Financial Services' "protection segment" - its life and long-term-care-insurance businesses.
Third-quarter pretax income was up 56% from a year earlier; the gain reported in the story was a comparison with the second quarter.
Also, the story inadvertently switched the timing of initial public offerings by MetLife Inc. and Hancock. The latter's offering was made Jan. 27; MetLife went public April 7.
