The Tuesday article "Do You Know Me ? (Does It Matter?)" on page 1 erred in attributing statistics on identity theft to Trans Union LLC, the credit bureau. It was an independent privacy advocate who said that Trans Union had fielded about 700,000 inquiries about identity theft this year, and that that figure was 20 times as many as in 1992. Trans Union says it does not stand behind those numbers.
